Back-to-School Swim Lesson Checklist

Swimming is a perishable skill — it fades over a long break, and drowning risk is year-round. This one-page plan keeps summer's progress from washing away once school starts.

🔄 Make the Switch to Year-Round Lessons

  • Decide before the outdoor season ends. The gap between the last outdoor swim and the first cool weekend is where families lose the habit — catch it early.
  • Find an indoor, warm-water program you can attend weekly through fall, winter, and spring.
  • Book the fall slot now. After-school and Saturday times fill first — reserve before they're gone.
  • Tell the new instructor where your child left off — what they can do, what they were working on, and any nerves — so no time is wasted re-testing.
  • Keep the same weekly day and time. Put it on the family calendar next to soccer and piano and protect it like any school-year commitment.

🏊 Keep Skills Sharp Between Lessons

  • Add practice reps. An open-swim or supervised community-pool visit a couple of times a month turns taught skills into automatic ones.
  • Rehearse the core skills: back float, getting to the wall, feet-first entry — under close, phone-free adult eyes.
  • Keep the rules alive on dry land: ask an adult first, never swim alone, feet-first in unfamiliar water.
  • Track progress so you can see skills holding steady over the winter instead of quietly slipping.
  • Keep it playful. Light, fun water time keeps your child wanting to be in the pool.

⚠️ Why It Matters All Year

  • Drowning risk doesn't take the school year off. Bathtubs, indoor hotel and gym pools, and holiday travel all keep water in the picture.
  • Skills fade fastest for the youngest swimmers — and often right before a spring-break or holiday pool trip.
  • Current skills = a child prepared for water whenever they meet it, not just in July.
