Life Jacket Sizing & Fit Guide

A life jacket only protects your child if it fits. Use this one-page guide to size by weight, confirm the fit, and run a quick check before every trip on the water.

⚖️ Step 1: Size by Weight, Not Age

Coast Guard-approved jackets are sized by weight. The exact range is on the label inside — always read it and match your child's current weight.

CategoryApprox. weight range
Infant8–30 lbs
Child30–50 lbs
Youth50–90 lbs
Adult90+ lbs (sized by chest measurement)

Don't buy one to "grow into" — an oversized jacket can slip off over the head in the water.

✅ Step 2: The 2-Minute Fit Test

  • Fasten everything — zip the zipper and clip every buckle, including the crotch strap for young children.
  • Tighten the straps so it's snug but your child can breathe easily and move their arms.
  • Do the lift-test: have your child raise both arms overhead while you pull up on the shoulders. If it slides up over the chin or ears, it's too big.
  • It passes if it's snug, doesn't cover the face, and can't be pulled off over the head.
  • Test in shallow, supervised water when you can, to see how it floats your child.

👶 Step 3: Infants & Toddlers + What to Avoid

  • For babies & toddlers, look for: a padded head-support pillow, a grab handle on top, a crotch strap, and a face-up "turn" design.
  • Choose “U.S. Coast Guard Approved” — check the label. Skip inflatable jackets for kids.
  • Arm floaties & water wings are toys, not safety devices — never rely on them to keep a child afloat.
  • Puddle jumpers: some are approved, but they can teach an unsafe upright body position — not a substitute for a fitted life jacket.

🌊 Before Every Trip

  • Re-check the fit — kids grow, and last summer's jacket may be too small now.
  • Inspect for damage — faded color, torn fabric, frayed straps, or a waterlogged feel mean it's time to replace it.
  • Everyone wears one on and near open water — many states require kids under 13 to wear one on a moving boat (rules vary).
  • It's one layer, not the only one — pair it with constant adult supervision and swimming skills.
