The dangerous assumption
It is one of the most natural conclusions a parent can draw: my child passed swim lessons and swims well at the pool, so they are a "swimmer" and open water is just more of the same. Lifeguards and water-safety educators see the consequences of that assumption all summer long — capable pool swimmers who get into serious trouble the first time they swim in a lake, river, or ocean.
The skills your child learned are real and valuable. But they were learned in an environment engineered to be safe and predictable, and open water shares almost none of those conditions. Recognizing the gap is the first step to closing it.
No wall, no edge, nowhere to rest
In a pool, a tired swimmer is never more than a few strokes from a wall, a ladder, or a depth where they can stand. That safety net is invisible but constant, and pool swimmers rely on it without ever thinking about it. Open water removes it entirely. There is no wall to grab when arms get heavy, the bottom can drop from waist-deep to over-your-head in a single step, and the shore can be much farther than it looks.
This is why a child who can swim 25 yards in a pool may falter at the same distance in a lake: the distance is the same, but the option to stop and recover is gone. Teaching a child to roll onto their back and float to rest becomes far more important in open water, because floating is the only "wall" available.
Cold water changes everything
Pools are heated to a comfortable temperature. Lakes, rivers, and the ocean are often shockingly colder, especially below the warm surface layer. Sudden immersion in cold water triggers an involuntary gasp and rapid breathing — cold-water shock — that can cause a swimmer to inhale water and panic in the first moments. Within minutes, cold also drains strength and coordination from the arms and legs, so strokes that are automatic in a warm pool become clumsy and exhausting.

Currents, waves, and moving water
Pool water is still. Open water moves — sometimes visibly with waves and chop, sometimes invisibly with currents that can carry a swimmer away from shore faster than they can swim back. Ocean rip currents are the most famous example, but rivers, inlets, and even large lakes have currents that surprise people.
A swimmer trained only in calm water has no instinct for this. Waves break rhythm and breathing; currents create the panic of working hard and going nowhere. Children heading to the coast should understand rip current safety — especially the rule to stay calm and swim parallel to shore rather than fighting straight back — and should learn to read beach warning flags before they ever get in.
Murky water and the unseen bottom
A pool is clear and the bottom is always visible. Open water is often murky, hiding rocks, drop-offs, weeds, and other swimmers. A child cannot judge depth by looking, cannot see hazards underfoot, and cannot be seen as easily by rescuers if they go under. How to prepare a child for open water
The goal is not to keep children out of lakes and oceans — open-water swimming is a joy and a life skill. The goal is to bridge the gap deliberately rather than assuming it does not exist:
- Use a life jacket. Any child who is not a strong, experienced open-water swimmer wears a Coast Guard-approved life jacket in natural water, every time.
- Introduce open water gradually. Start in shallow, calm, lifeguarded areas and let the child get used to cold, murky, moving water with an adult right beside them.
- Teach the float-and-signal response. If they tire or get scared, the move is to flip onto their back, float, stay calm, and raise an arm to signal — not to thrash toward shore.
- Swim only where there are lifeguards, and always with a buddy. Never let a child swim alone in open water, regardless of pool skill.
- Teach the current rule. If caught in a current, stay calm, do not fight it head-on, and swim parallel to shore until free.
- Respect conditions. Check flags, weather, and water temperature, and keep kids out when conditions are rough.
Pool lessons give your child the foundation. Open water asks them to apply that foundation in a setting that is colder, rougher, deeper, and far less forgiving.
