Swim Lesson Level Placement Guide

Place your child by what they can do in the water — not by age. Check off each skill your child can do consistently and unassisted. The highest tier where most boxes are checked is your child’s likely starting level.

🔵 Level 1 — Water Introduction (Beginner)

Getting comfortable and safe in shallow water. Start here if most boxes below are NOT yet checked.

  • Enters and exits the water safely with help, without fear.
  • Puts face in the water and blows bubbles.
  • Submerges head briefly and comes up calmly.
  • Floats on the back or front with light support.

🟢 Level 2 — Water Acclimation & Self-Rescue

The survival core. Ready here once the Level 1 boxes are solid.

  • Floats on the back unassisted for several seconds.
  • Rolls from front to back to breathe on their own.
  • Glides through the water and paddles a few feet unassisted.
  • Returns to the wall or a safe exit after a short swim.

🟡 Level 3 — Stroke Development (Intermediate)

Turning paddling into real swimming.

  • Swims freestyle with side breathing across a short pool.
  • Swims backstroke a recognizable distance.
  • Treads water or stays afloat in deeper water for 20+ seconds.
  • Jumps in, resurfaces, and swims to safety independently.

🔴 Level 4 — Stroke Refinement & Endurance (Advanced)

Polishing strokes and building distance and deep-water confidence.

  • Swims freestyle and backstroke the full length with control.
  • Beginning breaststroke and/or butterfly.
  • Treads water and is confident in deep water.
  • Swims continuously for endurance and can perform basic turns.
