🦶 Step 1: Prevent Slips

  • Wear grippy water shoes or sandals. Smooth wet tile is the most common hazard.
  • Walk, never run. Practice “walking feet” before you go in.
  • Dry feet on a mat before stepping onto bare tile or the pool deck.
  • Carry wet items in a bag so both hands are free for a child or a rail.
  • Tell staff about spills or standing water. Do not wait for someone else to report it.

👪 Step 2: Supervision and Privacy

  • Children under about 8 stay with an adult. Use a family or single-stall changing room when available.
  • Teach the private-body rule. No one touches or photographs private areas; tell a trusted adult right away.
  • Agree on a stay-with-me rule when you leave the changing area and cross to the deck.
  • Keep the door to the pool in view. If your child is missing, check the water first, then call 911.
  • Ask staff how children are escorted between the changing area and the pool.

⏱️ Step 3: The Changing Routine

If your child cannot be found, check the pool and any other water first, tell staff immediately and call 911 if they are not found within moments. Seconds matter.

🎒 Step 4: Belongings and Hand-Offs

  • Label the swim bag and everything in it. Photograph or list what you pack.
  • Leave valuables at home. Use your own lock when lockers are allowed.
  • Give the instructor medical information such as an inhaler or allergy plan before the first class.
  • Agree on a pickup spot so a child who finishes early is never alone in the changing room.
  • Ask about phone and photo rules and how lost items and late pickups are handled.
