📝 Step 1: The Basics
Child’s name and age
Class day, time and length
Address and parking notes
Who is driving and who is watching
School’s rules on what to bring
Adults who bring my child
🎒 Step 2: Pack the Swim Bag
Pack the swimsuit, towel and dry change of clothes. Add anything the school asks you to bring.
Check goggles, cap and swim diaper fit. Replace anything damaged or too small.
Add a plastic bag for wet items. Last week’s wet items should be washed and dry.
Pack after-class needs. Wipes, a hairbrush, any skin or hair care items and a warm layer.
Put the packed bag by the door or in the car. It cannot be forgotten if it is already there.
👕 Step 3: Clothes and the Ride
Lay out easy-on clothes for the trip home. Add layers when the weather is cool.
Confirm the class time and address. Check for schedule changes or messages from the school.
Decide who is driving and who is watching. Every adult should know the plan.
Allow extra time for parking and a restroom stop. Rushing leads to mistakes near water.
Check the car seat is ready. Children ride home in the right seat, with dry, warm clothes.
🥤 Step 4: Food, Drink and Bedtime
Plan a light snack and water before class. A big meal right before class is usually not ideal; ask my pediatrician if I am unsure.
Pack a water bottle and a snack for after class. Hungry, thirsty children are cranky children.
Keep the evening calm and bedtime regular. A rested child listens and enjoys class more.
Check how my child feels. If my child seems unwell, follow the school’s illness policy.
Tell the school about anything new. A new health concern, a recent illness or a toilet-training change.
💬 Step 5: Talk It Through
Tell my child what will happen. Where we are going, who the instructor is and that I will be watching.
Let my child help pack the bag. A sense of control helps nervous children.
Listen to worries and answer honestly. Do not promise there is nothing to be nervous about.
Remind my child of the pool rules. Walking feet, listen to the instructor and never go near water without an adult.
Remember that lessons do not make a child drown-proof. I will keep watching closely at every lesson.
🌅 Step 6: Morning Check
Look at the bag. Is everything in it?
Make a restroom stop before class. Our bathroom and potty break checklist can help.
Offer the planned snack and water. Keep it light.
Leave with time to spare. Arrive calm and early.
Never leave my child alone near water or in the car. Not even briefly.
✅ Step 7: Our Family Plan
Who packs the bag
Who drives and who watches
Adults and relatives who need a copy
Changes after the first month
Young children are never alone near water. If a child is in trouble in the water, get help and call 911 or my local emergency number. Lessons do not make a child drown-proof, at any age.
