🛡️ Safety First (Non-Negotiable)

  • Instructors are certified and trained — in swim instruction, CPR, and water rescue. A quality program is glad to tell you.
  • A dedicated lifeguard watches the water — separate from the instructor, scanning the pool, especially in group classes.
  • Every child stays within arm's reach — no beginner is ever left floating or waiting unwatched on the wall.
  • Class size is small — confirm the exact child-to-instructor ratio for your child's age and level.
  • The pool is clean, clear, and secure — visible bottom, controlled deck, posted safety rules.
  • Emergency procedures exist — staff can tell you what happens if a child struggles and where rescue gear is.

👀 Watch a Real Lesson (10 Minutes)

  • The water is warm — no shivering, blue lips, or kids desperate to climb out. Cold children don't learn.
  • The instructor is patient and encouraging — builds trust; never dunks, forces, or uses fear.
  • Every child is active, not waiting — engaged and practicing, not idle and unwatched.
  • Real skills are taught — bubbles, breath control, floating, kicking, and getting back to the wall.
  • There's a clear structure — warm-up, skill focus, practice, calm finish — not aimless play.
  • Nervous kids are met with patience — a smaller step and more time, never "just throw them in."

❓ Questions to Ask the School

  • "What is the class size and ratio?" — confirm the real number of children per instructor.
  • "How are instructors certified and trained?" — ask about certification, CPR, and ongoing training.
  • "How warm is the water?" — essential for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.
  • "How do your curriculum and levels work?" — a good program has defined skill levels and can explain them.
  • "How will I know my child is progressing?" — look for regular feedback or progress reports.
  • "What are your make-up, refund, and safety policies?" — clear, honest answers signal a well-run school.

🚩 Red Flags — Walk Away If You See

  • Children left unsupervised on the wall or deck while the instructor works with one child.
  • Fear-based teaching — dunking, ignoring genuine distress, or "toughening kids up."
  • Oversized classes or no lifeguard — supervision that can't keep every child within reach.
  • Cold water and shivering kids, or no clear curriculum or progress tracking.
  • "Drown-proof" promises — no lesson can do this, and reputable programs never claim it.

What Every Parent Should Remember

  • Safety comes before everything else. A program that gets supervision right earns the chance to be judged on teaching.
  • Small ratios and warm water are the quiet signs of a program built around how young children actually learn.
  • Trust your gut — and it's okay to switch. If the safety or comfort boxes stay empty, keep looking.
