🏠 Why this is a home problem, not a pool company problem
Ask a family with a backyard pool where the chemicals are and you will usually get a vague gesture towards a shed. Ask what is on the shelf next to them and the answer gets vaguer. That gap is the subject of this page, and the numbers say it is not a small one.
CDC analysis of national emergency department data found an estimated 13,508 U.S. emergency department visits for pool chemical injuries across 2015 to 2017. More than a third of the patients — 36.4 percent — were under 18. At least 56.3 percent of the injuries happened at a residence rather than at a public pool. And roughly two thirds landed inside the summer swim season, between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day. Nearly 94 percent of people were treated and released, and no deaths were documented, so this is not a category of catastrophe. It is a category of avoidable, painful, extremely common household injury that happens to be concentrated on children in the same twelve weeks their families are thinking hardest about the water.
The reason it deserves its own page is that everything else we publish about backyard pools works by adding a layer — another fence, another alarm, another trained adult, another taught skill. Chemical safety is the one place on this whole site where that instinct is backwards. Buying one more product and setting it down on the same shelf creates a hazard that neither product had on its own. Here, the inventory is the risk. Fewer products, stored further apart, is the safer shed.

📦 Moment 1 — the shelf: what is stored next to what
Start here, because this is the one that can hurt somebody while nobody is in the room.
The CDC’s storage guidance is short and worth following line by line: separate incompatible chemicals, and acid and chlorine are the example it gives by name. Lock chemicals up to protect people and animals. Keep chemicals dry and do not mix different chemicals, including different types of chlorine product. Keep them cool, in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. Keep them closed in their original, labelled containers. Store liquid chemicals low to prevent accidental contact.
Two of those deserve expanding, because they are the ones families get wrong for sensible-sounding reasons.
Separate places, not separate shelves. Acid and chlorine together produce chlorine gas, and a jug does not need anybody’s help to make that happen — it only has to leak, or tip, or split in the heat. A shelf above another shelf is a drip away from being the same shelf. If you have one cupboard, one of the two products needs to live somewhere else entirely.
Dry beats close. This is the genuinely counterintuitive one. Almost every other product in a garage is fine to get damp. The dry sanitisers on a pool shelf are engineered to react the instant they meet water — that is the entire point of them — so a leaking roof, a snow-melt line under a door, a hose coiled on the shelf above or a scoop put back wet is not untidiness, it is an ignition path. Which means the safest place for pool chemicals is the driest place you have, and that is almost never the place closest to the pool. Most families store them by the water because they think of them as a pool thing. Storage is a garage-and-shed question, and the pool has nothing to do with it.
While you are in there: keep chemicals away from fuel, the mower and barbecue gas, and make sure the lock is a real lock. 💨 Moment 2 — the lid: opening the container
If you take one thing from this page, take this: the dangerous part of the job is opening the container.
Injury report narratives point most often at people inhaling chemical fumes or dust, particularly while opening containers. Poisoning was the most common diagnosis in the CDC data, and about 90 percent of those poisonings came from breathing something in rather than swallowing it. The eye was the affected body part in about a third of all cases. Nobody expects that. Everybody expects the spill.
So slow the lid down. Open it outdoors, in moving air, standing upwind with your face turned away — never in a closed shed, a garage with the door down, or a pump room. Put safety goggles and gloves on before the lid moves, not after; goggles rather than sunglasses, and a mask if the label calls for one. Open one container at a time and close it again before the next one opens, because two open lids on one bench is how two products meet without anyone deciding to mix them.
And read the whole label before each use, not once when you bought it. The label is where the incompatibility list lives, along with the protective equipment, the dose and the wait time. Children go indoors for the whole job. Not “playing over there” — indoors, or with another adult. The second recurring circumstance in the injury narratives is pool chemicals that were simply not secured away from children.
🥣 Moment 3 — the scoop: measuring and adding
There is one rule here that people reverse, and reversing it is how a routine job becomes a violent one.
Chemical goes into water. Water never goes into chemical. The CDC states it plainly: only pre-dissolve a pool chemical when the product label directs it, and when the label does direct it, add the pool chemical to the water — never water to the pool chemical, because a violent and potentially explosive reaction can occur. If the label does not tell you to pre-dissolve, no bucket should be involved at all.
Around that sits the never-mix rule, which is broader than most people apply it. Never mix chlorine products with acid. Never mix different pool chemicals with each other or with any other substance — including two chlorine products that look similar, and including old and fresh stock of what is nominally the same thing. Mixing also happens by routes nobody would call mixing: a shared scoop carrying residue from the last job into the next one, a spill of one product swept into another, a bucket rinsed but not dried.
So: one scoop per product, labelled, dried, and stored with that product. Measure rather than eyeball — over-dosing is the usual cause of the stinging eyes and itchy skin that get blamed vaguely on “too much chlorine” later in the week. Add one product, then let the pump circulate before you add the next, so two doses meet in a pool’s worth of water rather than concentrated in the plumbing. And have the pump running, always: chemicals fed into still water sit wherever they land and then arrive all at once when the water moves.

🏊 Moment 4 — the re-entry: when the kids get back in
The third recurring circumstance in the injury narratives is the one parents are most likely to cause by accident: pool chemicals added to the water just before the injured person got in.
Nobody is in the water while you dose. Nobody gets back in until the wait on the label has passed, with the pump running. The wait varies by product, dose and pool volume, so the label is the authority and a kitchen timer is what makes the wait real when a child is standing there asking. Test the water before the first child gets in, rather than after somebody complains.
Then tell the other adults. Most re-entry injuries involve somebody who did not know a dose had just gone in — a partner, a grandparent, a neighbour’s child who let themselves through the gate. A sign on the gate for an afternoon costs nothing.
One more thing worth un-learning here. A strong chemical smell is a reason to stay out, not proof the water is clean. That sharp poolside smell mostly comes from chloramines, which form when chlorine combines with sweat, urine, sunscreen and dirt carried in by swimmers. They irritate eyes and airways and they eat the chlorine that should be killing germs. A well-run pool barely smells at all. 🗑️ The leftovers — containers, spills and the bucket nobody can identify
Every pool shed eventually acquires a container whose label has gone. It is the single most common finding when families run this audit, and it has a specific answer.
Never reuse a pool chemical container for anything — not another chemical, not water, not fuel, not storage — and follow the label for disposal. For anything unlabelled, the CDC points you at your local or state hazardous materials agency for the proper disposal procedure. It is a routine question for them and it is not a thing to use up or pour away. A container that is bulging, damp, crusted, warm or smelling wrong is an evacuate-and-call rather than a tidy-up: people out and upwind first, then the phone.
Respond to spills immediately, the way the label directs, with the door open and children well away. And never clean one product up by sweeping it into another.
Run the whole audit twice a year, at pool opening and at pool closing. Those two weekends are when most families move, open, buy and dose the most chemicals, and they bracket the season in which two thirds of these injuries occur. 🚨 If something goes wrong: two numbers
Decide this before you need it, and write both numbers on the card where the chemicals are. A number saved in one adult’s phone is not a plan for the adult who is standing there.
Call 911 if somebody is struggling to breathe, collapsed, unresponsive, or has chemical in their eyes and cannot open them. Get everyone out and upwind into fresh air first, and do not go back in for the container.

🏊 The honest limit of everything on this page
Worth saying plainly, because it would be easy to let this page feel like it is protecting your child in the pool.
It is not. Every rule here guards the child who is not in the water — the one who found an open bucket, climbed to a shelf, or walked through a cloud of dust off a lid. A locked shed does nothing at all for a child who is already in the pool. That child is protected by three things and none of them are on a shelf: a four-sided fence with a self-latching gate, an adult who is actually watching, and what the child can do when they end up in water they did not plan on — get to the surface, roll onto the back, float and breathe, turn, and reach an edge.
