🔍 How can I tell if pool water is safe just by looking?
Stand at the deep end and find the main drain on the bottom — if you cannot see it clearly, do not let anyone swim. This one test does double duty, and that is why it belongs first. Cloudy water tells you the disinfectant or the filtration is losing ground, which is a germ problem. It also means a child face-down on the bottom would be invisible from the deck, which is a drowning problem. Look for film, foam, or debris sitting undisturbed on the surface, which tells you how recently anyone paid attention. 👎 Does a strong chlorine smell mean the pool is clean?
No — it almost always means the opposite, and this is the most useful thing most parents have never been told. Fresh chlorine dissolved in water is close to odourless. The sharp, eye-watering smell people call “pool smell” is chloramines: compounds that form when chlorine reacts with the sweat, urine, body oils, and cosmetics that swimmers carry in with them. So the smell is not evidence of vigorous disinfection. It is evidence of a heavy contamination load, and often of a chlorine level being consumed faster than staff are replacing it.
Indoors this matters more. Chloramine gas is heavier than air and collects in a layer just above the water surface — precisely where a child's face is. If you walk into an indoor pool enclosure and your eyes sting within a minute, that is a ventilation failure, not a strong pool. 🧪 What chlorine and pH levels should a pool have?
The CDC recommends at least 1 part per million of free chlorine in pools, at least 3 ppm in hot tubs, and a pH between 7.0 and 7.8. Free chlorine is the number that matters, because it is the fraction still available to kill germs — total chlorine includes the spent chloramines that are causing the smell. Hot tubs need triple the pool target for a straightforward reason: heat and aeration strip disinfectant out of the water far faster, which is why hot tubs punch so far above their weight in outbreak statistics.
pH is the quieter half of the pair. Push it outside 7.0–7.8 and chlorine becomes measurably less effective at the same concentration, so a pool can hit its chlorine target and still be under-disinfected. Water that has drifted is also the usual culprit behind stinging eyes and irritated skin that parents blame on “too much chlorine.” You do not need to test a public pool yourself — you need to ask. 💩 What is a “code brown,” and how long does the pool close?
A code brown is a fecal incident in the water, and the closure length depends entirely on whether it was formed stool or diarrhea — roughly 30 minutes for the first, hours for the second. For formed poop, CDC guidance has staff close the pool, remove it with a net or bucket rather than vacuuming it, then raise the free chlorine to 2 ppm at a pH of 7.5 or less and hold those levels for 30 minutes while confirming the filtration system is operating. That is a specific disinfection requirement with a clock attached, not a courtesy delay that a polite request can shorten.
Diarrhea is treated as a different category of event. It is presumed to be a high-risk Cryptosporidium contamination, and a public pool operator responds by raising free chlorine very high for hours. A contaminated hot tub gets the most drastic treatment of all: drained, scrubbed, refilled, and brought to pH 7.0–7.8 with at least 3 ppm free chlorine for 30 minutes. 🦠 Why can't chlorine just kill everything instantly?
Because chlorine is fast against nearly every germ and remarkably slow against one. The CDC publishes the inactivation times at 1 ppm free chlorine, pH 7.5 or less, and water at 77°F or warmer, with no cyanuric acid in the water. E. coli O157:H7 takes under one minute. Hepatitis A virus takes about 16 minutes. Giardia takes about 45 minutes. Cryptosporidium takes about 15,300 minutes — roughly 10.6 days.

🚽 What habits keep my family from being the problem?
Nobody swims with diarrhea — and nobody swims for two full weeks after it stops. That second half is the part that surprises people. Both the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics give this guidance, because someone recovering from Crypto can keep shedding the parasite for up to two weeks after symptoms end, and because Crypto survives properly chlorinated water for days. One swimmer who feels fine can contaminate a pool that is being run correctly. It is an inconvenient rule and it is the single most protective one on the list.
The rest are small and habitual. Take a bathroom break every 60 minutes whether or not anyone asks — set a timer, because children will not volunteer. Check swim diapers every 30 to 60 minutes and change them well away from the water, remembering that swim diapers slow leakage rather than sealing it.
